Downtown Mural Project
The support wall along Church Street is located along a portion of the Maryville Greenbelt but honestly goes unnoticed to those who travel past it. When the City of Maryville decided that this would be the ideal spot for our first mural project, we were definitely excited to take on a canvas with this kind of exposure. Our initial location proposal, the wall along Cusick St, was long and narrow which made it so each artist's piece would follow a linear layout. Having a larger surface allowed us to build a composition that was more interwoven and worked together in unison with only a few alterations to the original sketches.
Original Composition Layout
Our process began on Friday June 26th with trimming back some of the over hanging foliage then preparing and priming the face of the wall. After that each artist began work in the medium of their choice be it spray cans or traditional paint. Working side by side allowed us to discuss how each piece could interact with each others to make a more unified composition.
The final product is a contemporary painting that shows a variety of styles and subject matters reflecting a modern side to local art. Our goal to create a piece public art that local residents can enjoy and attract visitors to experience large scale murals first hand is reflected through the countless citizens who have give their support and feedback. We believe this is just a first step to creating more public art for the community.
