Davis Lofts Alleyway in Maryville TN

Location : along Cusick St. between McCammon Ave & East Harper St.

The Davis Building, in downtown Maryville TN, was once the location of the historical Davis Printing Company. After their close, the building and alleyway alongside it fell victim to neglect and wear of time. Years ago the Davis Building was sold in sections and split into offices, apartments, and studios adopting its new title as the Davis Lofts. Even after extensive renovations, the exterior of the building as well as the alleyway are still victims of vandalism. Although this walkway alongside Cusick St. is traveled infrequently, those who do pass through witness a neglected alley riddled with the unsightly scars of amateur graffiti.

As the years progress, the walkway becomes more a detraction to visitors, residents and community members. The Downtown Mural Project proposal is to adopt this forgotten alleyway and create a place for local artist to express themselves in the format of a collaborative mural that the Blount County community can appreciate. Public art is scarce in Downtown Maryville and throughout the city itself. This will give local professionals a canvas to present s contemporary mural that reflects the evolving state of culture through art. Given that art, artists, and our city are always

changing, our goal is for this mural to change with it. The Last Friday Artwalk is an annual tradition that allows artists setup throughout Downtown Maryville and present new work to the public. Our vision is for this mural to be reworked every year to open the first Artwalk of the season. Visitors can enjoy a fresh and unique painting that will carry them through to the following  year when it is painting again. Multiple artists will be able to participate and the community can see a variety of local styles.
